Configuring ht://Dig

Configuring ht://Dig

For complete documentation on configuring and running ht://Dig, point to the file /usr/doc/htdig-version-number/index.html with your Web browser or refer to the ht://Dig Web page at http://www.htdig.org.

NotePlease Note

ht://Dig does not currently have the ability to connect to a secure Web server. If you want to use ht://Dig, you'll have to use it with the non-secure Web server which was provided as part of your secure Web server's default configuration.

To get started with ht://Dig, edit the /etc/htdig.conf file as follows:

  1. Change the line that begins with:

    start_url: http://www.htdig.org/

so that it names your domain instead of www.htdig.org/.

  2. Save the htdig.conf file. You may wish to read through this file and make any other changes you think are appropriate, but this is the only required change.

  3. Type the following command to set up your search database:

    rundig

rundig is in /usr/bin, which should be in your path.

  4. Now point your browser to http://your_domain/htdig/search.html to search your Web site.

  5. You may also want to customize the following files to display information specific to your site:

    /home/httpd/htdig/search.html

This is the page that you will need to link to for searching your site. You may wish to make this file a symlink to index.html in the same directory, so that the URL http://your_domain/htdig/ works.

    /var/lib/htdig/header.html

This page will be displayed at the top of any search results.

    /var/lib/htdig/footer.html

This page will be displayed at the bottom of any search results.

    /var/lib/htdig/nomatch.html

This page will be displayed when no search results have been found.

    /var/lib/htdig/syntax.html

This page will be displayed when a syntax error has occurred in a boolean expression.

  6. If your site changes often, you'll need to set up rundig and htmerge to run automatically using cron. See your system documentation for more information on cron.
