Red Hat is committed to providing schools with easy and cost-effective access to open source technology. As part of Red Hat's Education Initiative, we are promoting Red Hat Network (RHN) and the Red Hat Network Education Channel. Red Hat Network is the premier Linux systems management platform. It can be used to manage systems of various sizes, from updating a student or educator's personal system to, in the case of Red Hat Network, scaling to handle a multitude of systems in a university's production environment. Within Red Hat Network, we have made available the Red Hat Network Education Channel. This channel provides access to the K12 Linux Terminal Server Project (K12LTSP). K12LTSP is open source software based on Red Hat Linux and allows a server to power diskless workstations or thin client. Essentially, the individual systems in your lab will not have hard drives and therefore will not have software installed on them. All software runs off the server. This means minimized hardware requirements, improved system security, easier administration, and centralized control of your network. Most importantly, you eliminate the need to pay a software licensing fee for each client in your lab, and you reduce hardware costs because diskless clients do not have to meet the demanding hardware requirements of today's software. To get access to the K12LTSP channel, all you have to do is become an RHN user today. If you already have an account, your channel has been enabled and you should have access already. If you do not have an account, get more information on our purchase page or sign up for an new account.
