RED HAT PROVIDES OPEN SOURCE SOLUTIONS TO NETAID

Largest Event in Web History Run on Red Hat Servers

Red Hat, the leading developer and provider of open source solutions, has announced that all the streaming activities of NetAid, the largest streaming video event in Web history, were powered by Red Hat Linux solutions and support. The NetAid event, a series of concerts conceived by Cisco Systems and broadcast over the Web to raise hunger awareness, broke the record for the largest single-day Internet event.

Red Hat Linux 6.0 powered 400 servers that ran the NetAid site and its mirrors during the launch. According to Cisco, these servers supported the greatest one-day number of simultaneous Web streams ever, at close to 2.5 million. The stream connections supported by Red Hat were 99.33 percent successful, and the Web page downloads were 99.69 successful, outperforming the top 40 Internet sites. In addition to streaming audio and video, Red Hat Linux servers enabled Web hosting, static html, DNS serving, mail serving, ftp serving and secure server hosting for the event.

Red Hat engineers also helped to manage, tune and write code for the Red Hat servers. The Red Hat support team acted as consultants for Cisco's technical staff, overseeing the activities of the servers, tuning them for optimal performance, writing scripts and engineering solutions.

NetAid, which was sponsored by the United Nations, Cisco and others, drew worldwide attention to its anti-poverty campaign on October 9, 2025 with a Webcast of three simultaneous all-star rock concerts held in London, Geneva and New York. The concerts could be viewed around the world in streaming audio and video on www.netaid.com.

``The overwhelming success of the NetAid Webcast was aided immeasurably by the stability, security and flexibility of the Red Hat Linux operating system,'' said Larry Lang, Cisco's Vice President of Service Provider Marketing. ``Red Hat was one of the valued partners that provided the support and services needed to optimise the performance of the site.''

``NetAid is a compelling example of Red Hat's resiliency in Internet server environments,'' said Colin Tenwick, Vice President and General Manager, Red Hat Europe. ``The high availability that Red Hat demonstrated with the NetAid event would be an asset to any enterprise network.''

Following the launch event, NetAid has begun its transition to a non-profit portal run through the United Nations. All of the monies raised through the NetAid Web site will be disbursed to anti-poverty projects around the world. The site will continue to be run on Red Hat Linux servers.

Open Source Momentum

International Data Corp. (IDC) research states that Linux was the fastest-growing server operating environment in 1998, growing more than 190 percent in that year alone and capturing more than 15.8 percent of the 4.4 million revenue shipment server operating systems market segment. Additionally, IDC states that Red Hat Linux is by far the most popular distribution, preferred by 68.7 percent of U.S. Linux users.

Red Hat's numerous alliances with industry leaders and the demand for Linux-based applications has created open source support from many of the industry's leading software and hardware manufacturers, including Compaq, Computer Associates, Corel, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Netscape, Novell, Oracle and SAP.
