Overview

The Perl interface to CCVS must sometimes be built after the rest of CCVS is installed. This is the case, for example, when you're using a distribution that doesn't always come with the same version of Perl, or which doesn't by default include Perl at all. If we can't make sure we're using the same version of Perl that you are, it may not be safe for us to distribute a pre-built version of the Perl interface.

Finding the Source Code

The source code for the Perl interface is in src/perl under the directory in which you installed CCVS. So, if you used the default location, it would be /usr/local/ccvs/src/perl. The CCVS module is fairly standard as Perl modules go, and so the MANIFEST file in that directory lists all the neccesary files.

Building the Perl Module

The first step is to run the Perl interpreter on the Makefile.PL file in that directory. This produces the file "Makefile" needed to complete the rest of the process. Once this has been done, you may type "make" to build the Perl module according to the defaults on your system. You can also type "make perl" if you want to build a custom Perl binary that has the C portion of the CCVS module statically built in.

If you wish to test the Perl module, you'll need to make sure you're the user configured to run CCVS (eg. use the "su" command if you're not already this user). Then you'll have to make sure there's a configuration named "demo" that's currently usable, perhaps by running "ccvs_configure". Once this has been set up, you should be able to type "make test".

Installing the Perl Module

To install the Perl module for actual use, you'll need to make sure you're the user permitted to install Perl modules (often this is root). Then you can type "make install".
