Barceló Viajes relies on Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization to consolidate its datacenters in Madrid and Palma de Mallorca
RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Barceló Viajes, a leading Spanish travel operator, has chosen Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization to consolidate its datacenters that support the company's mission-critical business platforms. By virtualizing its systems, Barceló aims to reduce its server farm by half. With Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, Barceló has enhanced the ease of management of its systems and has experienced improved flexibility, scalability and performance.
Following an agreement with American Express Travel to form the joint venture “American Express Barceló Viajes”, one of the leading Spanish corporate travel companies, Barceló required the installation of a new Business Continuity Plan, which required the establishment of a new datacenter in Madrid, in addition to the Palma de Mallorca datacenter. Barceló expanded its existing deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux to its new datacenter, and implemented Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization across all of its systems to support all of Barceló’s operating and business applications, including SAP solutions, Oracle databases, e-mail management, internal project management applications and monitoring.
"We cannot afford any service downtime. Having carried out successful projects with Red Hat, we were confident this implementation would be rolled out smoothly. Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization offered a highly reliable foundation for our mission-critical applications that is capable of supporting large workloads. It has enabled smooth integration with the rest of our operating applications," said Mar Muñoz, systems director, Barceló Viajes.
In addition to a new Business Continuity Plan, Barceló also required a solution that could meet the continuous growth of its service offerings. Barceló’s legacy systems required an ongoing expansion of its server farm, resulting in increasingly complex management and growth of human and hardware resources. By virtualizing its platform with Red Hat, Barceló expects to improve the scalability of its infrastructure and gain the ability to take full advantage of the resources available. Red Hat is working with Barceló with the objective of reducing its server farm by half and enabling Barceló to realize savings in operating costs, energy consumption and space.
Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Manager provides Barceló with a simpler and more efficient management tool for its platforms. Amongst other functionalities, the organization can deploy new virtual servers in a few minutes, thus responding more quickly to an increase in demand for its IT services.
"Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization based on KVM technology provides us with enhanced capabilities, such as live migration, high availability, system scheduler and power saver, that combined with the solution's cost efficiency and powerful performance, meets Barceló's business needs. We are convinced that Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization will continue to provide market-leading capabilities," said Muñoz. "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization has a promising product roadmap that we consider very powerful."

"Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization provides us with an ideal platform to get the most out of our current hardware at a very attractive price point."
Jeppesen develops crew and fleet optimization systems for the transportation industry. It uses a method of "continuous integration" in its software engineering process whereby any new developments to the software undergo continuous and thorough automated testing.
"We cannot afford any downtime of our build systems as this would mean that we cannot provide critical updates and fixes for our customers whose businesses depend on our optimization software," said Kalle Kiviaho, systems administrator at Jeppesen. "Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization provides the reliability and scalability that we demand and has given us confidence to trust our business to run on it."

Deployment of JBoss Enterprise BRMS improves scalability, efficiency and risk management for investment company
Raleigh, NC – January 20, 2025 – Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Millennium Global Investments (MGI), a specialist in developing and managing alternative investment products for institutional investors, has selected JBoss Enterprise BRMS (Business Rules Management System) for its mission-critical business rules repository.
London-based MGI wanted to improve the flexibility of its compliance system so that its business and trade rules could be revised and adjusted rapidly within a managed environment. MGI selected JBoss Enterprise BRMS to bring business rules into a managed environment, standardise business rules and support the scalability of the business.
The transparency of the new repository enables MGI business users to gain access to detailed information about why certain rules may prevent trading. This access improves business users' efficiency and reduces the number of queries sent to MGI’s IT organisation. The transparent business rules repository is also an essential part of MGI’s risk management strategy
“Red Hat's flexible subscription terms for JBoss Enterprise Middleware allowed us to deploy only the components needed for the new platform and to avoid vendor lock-in. Unlike other vendors, Red Hat offers the ability to support other applications of the rules engine, be it market signal monitoring or algorithmic trading,” said Richard Macaskill, managing director, IT & Systems Development, MGI. “We were very pleased with the level of support Red Hat provided during the new business rules repository's development. We are extremely satisfied to have deployed an integrated business rules platform that has improved our efficiency and ability to manage risk.”
Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite is Red Hat’s on-premises systems management solution that provides software updates, configuration management, provisioning and monitoring across both physical and virtual Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. It offers customers opportunities to gain enhanced performance, centralized control and higher scalability for their systems, while deployed on a management server located inside the customer’s datacenter and firewall.
In September 2009, Red Hat released RHN Satellite 5.3, the first fully open source version of the product. This latest version offers opportunities for increased flexibility and faster provisioning setups for customers with the incorporation of open source Cobbler technology in its provisioning architecture. The 5.3 release is also designed to allow customers to better scale with server growth, offering the ability to manage large numbers of systems with comparable ease to managing one.
Recently, IDC also published a Red Hat-sponsored paper featuring the systems management benefits that customers have experienced with RHN Satellite. After interviewing 10 RHN Satellite customers in depth – crossing geographies and industry verticals — IDC reported significant return on investment (ROI) and productivity results for customers. Here are some of the highlights from the customer testimonials:
Average of 338% ROI
Average payback period of 4.8 months
A doubled increase in the number of Linux servers managed per system administrator
Average annual benefit of $82,521 per 100 Linux servers
Average of $23,207 in annual user productivity increase
In their own words, customers quoted in the paper showed that RHN Satellite helped them achieve:
Enhanced productivity: “If RHN Satellite Server didn’t exist, I would need another person or more.”
Scalability: “…with Satellite Server, once things are set up and it is in place, managing 200 servers is as easy as managing one.”
Reduced costs: “For an OS install, we used to hire someone outside to do the work. We would buy the hardware, then we pay them to come on site, answer questions. So now, we are completely avoiding that cost.”
Faster server setup and management: “As far as time saving goes, I would say we are easily saving 20 hours per month because we aren’t doing things manually.”
Business growth: “In terms of the impact, I always count what we can sell in an hour. If the system is down, we can’t sell and that’s a revenue impact. In just one hour, we might lose millions of euros, so the impact is huge.”
